Encouraging signs in Derby defeat

Dinbych Youth gave an improved performance in a free flowing derby encounter in which both sides had periods of domination. However the visitors took the honours from their ability to turn their pressure into points whilst their tight defence denied Dinbych the same opportunities.

In a younger and less physical Dinbych side the back row of flankers Ilan Jones and Gethin Evans supported No.8 and Captain Ioan Jones in competing well in open play and at the breakdown. The pack with prop William Russell excelling did well to hold their own at the scrums whilst lock Logan Jones worked hard at the line out. In the backs scrum half Luke Jones and fly half Cai Hughes provided a steady link in both defence and attack.

Ruthin opened the scoring in the 6th minute when Dinbych were caught offside deep in their 22 with the visitors taking a quick tap penalty to score an unconverted try in the corner. They went further ahead midway through the half after a period of heavy pressure during which they had been denied by strong Dinbych tackling. Eventually they broke through from a line out on the Dinbych 22 touching down under the posts for a converted try. The visitors then had to work hard for their third try just before half time when the created an overlap on the left to cross in the corner for an unconverted try.

Leading by seventeen points at the interval Ruthin increased their lead a few minutes into the second half when the again scored an unconverted try from a quickly taken tap penalty from 20 metres out. Dinbych then showed their attacking skills in a good period of pressure in the visitors 22 with Ioan Jones going over for a try which Cai Hughes converted. This spurred Ruthin into another period of attacking play only held out by desperate Dinbych defence. Unfortunately the hosts conceded a number of penalties in their 22 from which Ruthin finally capitalised with another short range unconverted try. Their final score was initiated with a counter-attack from a relieving Dinbych kick with slick handling resulting in an unconverted try as they crossed in the corner.
