Honours even in Div 1 thriller

A high scoring local derby between Dinbych and Mold saw both teams exchange score for score throughout the match with never more than a single score between them as they each crossed for five tries.

Using their bulkier pack Mold edged the first quarter of an hour of play winning the lion’s share of possession using their bulkier forwards effectively at set piece scrums and driving mauls in open play enabling them to dominate territorially. Dinbych however defended well and took the lead with a try by full back Gruff Roberts who crossed after a typical elusive run down the centre from halfway beating several defenders. Outside half Tommy Jones added the conversion points.

Mold soon replied with a try by hooker Scott Jones from a driving maul by the forwards from a short range line out. Centre Jack Lawrence converted with a well judged kick from wide out. Dinbych then edged in front with a 25 metre penalty by Tommy Jones before Mold again equalised with a similar score by Jack Lawrence when Dinbych were pinned for a high tackle.
Dinbych then took the lead again with the last move of the first half when Gruff Roberts broke out from deep in Dinbych territory before releasing right wing Kieran Bonar to run in for a try from halfway. Tommy Jones converted to take Dinbych into a 17 points to 10 lead at half time.

Mold responded immediately following the second half restart kick when Dinbych showed indecision after fielding a Mold relieving kick and trying to open up play from their own half only to have a kick of their own charged down. Mold regained possession at the ensuing breakdown with No.8 James Portsmouth going over in the corner for a try converted by Jack Lawrence. The visitors then went ahead for the first time when they took advantage of a penalty kick to the corner which resulted in a line out near the Dinbych line. From this the forwards generated a powerful driving maul ending with lock Reece Le Tissier touching down for a try converted by Jack Lawrence.

Trailing by 24 points to 17 midway through the half Dinbych drew level from a short range line out which flanker Gwern Pierce gained possession before feeding No.8 Ruben Verdoes at the front of the line to force his way over in the corner for a try converted by Tommy Jones. Mold reacted swiftly to go in front once again when hooker Scott Jones went over for his second but unconverted try from yet another driving maul after a short range line out.

The final ten minutes saw a burst of scoring with Dinbych going ahead after a period of heavy pressure when left wing Aidyn Jones cut inside after fielding a relieving kick just outside the Mold 22 and linking with Gruff Roberts who then passed inside for hooker Osian Burt to cross for a try. Tommy Jones converted to give the hosts a narrow lead by 31 points to 29. Dinbych went further ahead when centre Dan O’Sullivan kicked a long penalty to find touch near the Mold line. From the resulting line out the Dinbych forwards generated a powerful driving maul enabling replacement hooker Elliott Davies to touch down for a try. Tommy Jones was unlucky to see his conversion attempt to just dip under the cross bar. Mold refused to give in and forced a draw with  a last gasp score in the final minute starting with a long solo break from their own half before the forwards completed a set of pick and drives to force a try under the posts by replacement lock Ethan Roberts.

This left Jack Lawrence with an easy conversion to close an enthralling encounter.
