Dinbych marked their home return to Division 1 North with a hard fought victory over Llangefni in a free flowing match with both teams able to turn defence into counter attack leading to end to end play throughout.
Dinbych’s pack with Ruben Verdoes from the Western Province in South Africa making his club debut and including home debutants Dan North and Osian Burt edged the scrums and competed well in the lines out. Llangefni however were able to maintain possession through multiple phases of play through their work at the breakdown and excellent support play.
Llangefni had the better of the early exchanges and went ahead in the 12th minute when Dinbych conceded a penalty for offside close to their line in attempting to stem a period of sustained Llangefni pressure. Outside half Gwilym Thomas’ kick split the uprights and he added three more points with his second successful midway through the half as Dinbych again conceded a penalty for offside close to their line as they defended desperately.
Dinbych eventually opened their scoring ten minutes before half time when skipper Dan O’Sullivan replied with a penalty for offside in midfield after the Dinbych forwards had released the ball from driving play near the Llangefni corner. The hosts then took the lead after a sustained attack in the Llangefni 22 when they recycled possession several times before left wing Aidyn Jones cut inside to score an unconverted try wide out on the stroke of half time.
Trailing by 6 points to 8 Llangefni regained the lead in the opening minutes of the second half with a try by centre Owen Parry converted by Gwilym Thomas. Dinbych then replied with a solo effort from full back Gruff Roberts who kicked ahead from a short chip by Dan O’Sullivan and then regathering to cross for a try near the posts leaving an easy conversion for Dan O’Sullivan.
Although Llangefni launched a series of attacks they were repulsed by Dinbych’s defence with Ruben Verdoes leading the way with an aggressive tackling display. Dinbych then showed their attacking potential with a three try burst which took them well clear of the visitors. First Aidyn Jones broke through from inside the Dinbych 22 before offloading to Tom Seddon for a try again converted by Dan O’Sullivan. Gruff Roberts then crossed for his second try with an elusive run from scrum on halfway. Good driving play by the forwards from a short rang line out was recycled allowing Tom Seddon to burst through a packed defence to score his second try converted by Dan O’Sullivan. This gave Dinbych a try bonus point and widened their lead to 34 points to 13. Llangefni were still competing strongly and showed their determination in scoring two late tries. The first was a second try for Gwilym Thomas who sniped over in the corner from a short range maul after heavy pressure close to the Dinbych line. Flanker Tom Owen then broke through the middle on the Dinbych 22 for a try which Gwilym Thomas again converted to close the scoring of a pulsating match which was a credit to both sides.
