Dinbych strike 6 in victory over Dolgellau

Dinbych’s long wait for a league victory finally came to an end with a bonus point success in a basement battle with fellow strugglers Dolgellau. This was built on a solid foundation provided by a powerful scrum performance by the pack against bulkier opponents. The vital difference between the sides was the Dinbych backs’ incisive running which resulted in a hat trick of tries for skipper Tom Seddon and a brace by co-centre Gruff Roberts with wing Aidyn Jones adding another in a six try total. For their part Dolgellau edged the breakdown area with their speed and efficiency and also had strong individual runners who kept the Dinbych defence at full stretch throughout.

Dinbych opened the scoring in the 15th minute after surviving a period of heavy pressure near their own line from the visitors. They then counterattacked with Gruff Roberts and Aidyn Jones inter-passing before releasing Tom Seddon to run in from halfway for an unconverted try in the corner. The second score followed 3 minutes later when a long break out from inside the Dinbych half by right wing Kieran Bonar was recycled line into midfield ending with Gruff Roberts slicing through to score under the posts leaving an easy conversion for outside half Dan O’Sullivan. Tom Seddon then crossed for his second try bursting through the Dolgellau defence  from short range following a swich pass from Dan O’Sullivan. He then completed his hat trick when he broke down the left touchline from half way before kicking ahead and winning the race for the touchdown near the corner. Dan O’Sullivan converted both tries, the second with an excellent kick from wide out.

Dolgellau rallied on the stroke of half time when lock Carwyn Hughes forced his way over from short range for a try converted by outside half Gwion Jones which left the visitors trailing by 26 points to 7 at the interval. Their revival continued with a second score 10 minutes into the second halfwith a high class try when they counterattacked after defending near their own line. It ended with flanker Tim Jones showing great strength and pace to run in from inside his own half for a try under the posts for Gwion Jones to convert easily.

Dinbych responded quickly with Gruff Roberts scoring anoutstanding solo try using his pace and deceptive running from his own 10 metre line beating a number of would be tacklers on the way before crossing for a try which was again converted by Dan O’Sullivan. With 5 minutes remaining Dinbych scored their sixth try when wing Aidyn Jones got some reward for his hard work throughout with a try under the posts with Dan O’Sullivan adding his fifth conversion. There was still time left for Dolgellau to score their third try in the final minute when No.8 Marius Jones forced his way over from short range near the corner for an unconverted try which closed an excellent free flowing encounter between two teams desperate for success.
