Dinbych seconds opened their campaign in the WRU Shield competition with a narrow defeat by Mold in a keenly fought encounter.
Dinbych started well taking play into Mold’s territory with the pack responding well to prop Callum Taylor who was captaining the side for the first time to give a powerful performance especially at the scrums. It was not a surprise that the pack were responsible for the first score as they crossed the line with a surging drive following a 15 metre line-out with hooker Elliott Davies touching down for an unconverted try. Fly half Llion Edwards kept Dinbych on the front foot with some clever tactical kicking and then extended the lead with an excellent penalty from long range. Mold made most ground from long kick and chases with wing Sion Spencer and full back Dylan Easton doing well to cover them in defence. The hosts eventually opened their scoring with a short range penalty when Dinbych were caught offside which left them trailing at the interval by 8 points to 3.
Mold gradually edged both territory and possession as the second half progressed with Dinbych dependent on long kicks downfield by Llion Edwards to relieve the pressure. Mold however responded by counterattacks which were only stemmed by desperate defence by the visitors. Mold finally took advantage of a long period of pressure near the Dinbych line when the went over for a try from the side of a ruck in the shadow of the Dinbych posts. The easy conversion gave Mold the lead for the first time. This galvanised Dinbych into increased action as the game entered the closing minutes. They might have snatched the victory in the final minute as they were awarded a penalty only to see the long range attempt sail narrowly wide.
