Dinbych unable to claw back victory at Bryn Estyn Road

Despite giving a committed performance Dinbych fell to a narrow defeat to Wrexham in a high scoring game in which the lead changed hands several times. Dinbych’s only consolation was to gain 2 bonus points for matching their hosts in scoring five tries and the narrowness of their defeat. Skipper Dan O’Sullivan led by example scoring 22 points including a hat trick of tries.

Wrexham started well and opened the score after only 3 minutes when they attacked deep into the Dinbych 22 going through several phases of play from side to side before going over in the corner for an unconverted try. Dinbych replied 9 minutes later with a penalty by Dan O’Sullivan from 30 metres. Dinbych then went into the lead for the first time after 23 minutes when their pressure forced Wrexham to restart with a kick from behind their own line. This was caught by prop Dan Jones who fed full back Gruff Roberts whose elusive running allowed him to beat several defenders to go over near the corner for an unconverted try.

Wrexham fought their way back into the game forcing Dinbych to defend and eventually concede a penalty for a high tackle in their 22 which brought the hosts level. Dinbych then took the lead again when the forwards generated a powerful drive at a short range scrum allowing flanker Ruben Verdoes to claim a push over try near the posts which Dan O’Sullivan converted.

Trailing by 15 points to 8 Wrexham again scored in the 4th minute in the second half with a try from a driving maul following a short range line out which drew them level. Dinbych replied almost immediately when they attacked close to the Wrexham line when Dan O’Sullivan sniped over in the corner from a short range maul for an unconverted try for Dinbych to lead by 20 points to 15.

Wrexham then got the upper hand for a lengthy period during which the strong driving play by their bulky forwards and the excellent handling and support play by their backs stretched the Dinbych defence to its limits. A multiple phase attack resulted in a converted try which gave the hosts the lead and two further short range tries followed after prolonged periods of pressure. A penalty from in front of the posts took Wrexham further ahead to lead by 37 points to 20.

Dinbych did not go down without a fight and responded strongly with two late tries both scored by Dan O’Sullivan. For the first he went over beneath the posts after a powerful burst by flanker Robin Williams had been stopped just short of the line. Dan O’Sullivan converted Dinbych’s final try was from their best of the match in a long range attack as they went through multiple phases from deep in their own half with wing Aidyn Jones stopped just short near the left corner before possession was again recycled with Dan O’Sullivan finishing it off crossing wide out for his hat trick but unconverted try.
