Dinbych continued their unbeaten run at the top of Division 2 North with a bonus point victory over Newtown who were themselves on a good run and who fought fiercely to the very end to gain a losing bonus point. This was far from a perfect performance by Dinbych who gave away countless penalties from offences in contact and the breakdown area. However on a positive note it gave a number of former youth players the opportunity of gaining experience at senior level and a club debut to Calum Conway who made a promising start at Full Back.
Dinbych opened the scoring in the 7th minute when flanker Robin Williams broke away from a maul to cross for a try converted by outside half and skipper Dan O’Sullivan. Newtown replied after 25 minutes when Dinbych were penalised for a high tackle just outside their 22 which outsidehalf Will Holloway easily slotted over. Dinbych then went further ahead with a typical try by Centre Gruff Roberts who gained possession in open play just inside the Newtown half before using his pace to slice through the defence for a try again converted by Dan O’Sullivan. Newtown again clawed their way back on the stroke of half time with a second penalty by Will Holloway for another high tackle conceded in defence just inside the Dinbych 22.
Trailing by 14 points to 6 at the interval Newtown reduced the deficit further early in the second half with a third penalty when Dinbych offended at a breakdown near halfway. Dinbych soon replied with their third try when the forwards generated a powerful driving maul from a short range line out with hooker Elliott Davies gaining the touch down honours. Newtown again came back strongly as they forced Dinbych to concede a number of penalties near their line. The hosts opted for short range forward drives and despite a strong defensive effort by the visitors prop Freddie Jones finally forced his way over for a try.
Dinbych then went further ahead again after a period of sustained pressure deep in the Newtown 22 leading to left wing Aidyn Jones crossing in the corner for an unconverted try taking advantage of a miss pass by Dan O’Sullivan which outflanked the defenders. With time running out Newtown attacked strongly through their forwards in a series of scrums and forward drives close to the Dinbych right corner with centre Josh Jones forcing his way over for a try converted by Full Back Oliver Beddoes with the last kick of the match.
