Dinbych’s early season unbeaten run came to an abrupt end with defeat against a young Nant Conwy Teirw side in this WRU Division 3 First Round Cup tie although the final score did not reflect the competitive nature of much of the match. Dinbych performed well at the set piece with a strong and stable scrum and ample possession from the line out. Unfortunately Nant dominated the loose play through their physicality and work in contact and the breakdown area which allied to their close support play and fitness allowed them to pull away in the final quarter for an emphatic victory.
Nant opened strongly and soon went into the lead with two penalties which Dinbych conceded at the breakdown area before Dinbych replied with a well worked try on the half hour mark. This was initiated when lock Jamie Williams won a line out midway between half way and the Nant 22. From this the forwards then generated a long driving maul to the Nant line with Jamie Williams forcing his way over for an unconverted try. Dinbych then took the lead as they stole possession at a line out five metres out from the Nant line on the left before working crossfield with right wing Gethin Williams going over in the right hand corner for their second unconverted try. Nant regained the lead with an unconverted try as they capitalised on Dinbych’s failure to deal with a tactical kick to the corner. Dinbych then suffered a blow just before the interval with a yellow card for illegal contact in the air and another indiscretion minutes later for a high tackle resulted in a converted try as the hosts went over from a quickly taken tap penalty giving them an 18 points to ten lead at half time.
Nant increased their lead early in the second half as they counter attacked from a relieving kick from the Dinbych line to score their third unconverted try. Once again Dinbych replied after a series of drives to the line with skipper Dan O’Sullivan going over for a try which he also converted. This left Dinbych trailing by 23 points to 17 and still well in the game. Unfortunately for the visitors Nant’s better basic skills and fitness began to tell especially at the breakdown area where they either turned over possession or Dinbych were forced to concede penalties. Nant were able to pressurise Dinbych into defensive errors to add two additional converted tries and three penalties as they dominated the final quarter to end the match in style.
