Dragons missed opportunity on Maes Terry Bryer

With a lack of specialists in certain positions but with a surplus of front row forwards having to fill in the gaps Dinbych took to the field with a lopsided appearance for this WRU Shield encounter. Not surprisingly the hosts did well in all aspects of the forward exchanges but had to work hard to contain Mold in open play. Dinbych dominated the opening ten minutes through the excellent work of the forwards forcing Mold to defend strongly as they attempted to contain Dinbych’s driving play close to their line. It was Mold however who opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Dinbych were slow to react to a penalty conceded just inside their half near the touchline. A quick tap allowed No.8 Reece LeTissier to break past several defenders on a touchline run for a try converted by outside half Owen Williams. Although play was fairly even Mold went further ahead after half an hour when they switched play to the left from a ruck just inside their half to release left wing Oliver Owen on an outflanking run to cross near the corner for an unconverted try. With no further scoring this left the visitors leading by 12 points at the interval.

As in the first half Dinbych again started the second period well pressurizing Mold close to their line and opened their account after 10 minutes with lock Lewys Eden forcing his way over for a try after breaking from a short range ruck. Scrum half James Tilley who proved an effective link at all times added the conversion points. Mold the replied with a try by scrum half Richard Hopkins who broke away on the blind side of a scrum on the Dinbych 22 with Owen Williams adding the conversion points. Hopkins was then quickest to react when the ball popped out of the side of a scrum near the Dinbych line to snipe over for his second try again converted by Owen Williams. Dinbych were still competing strongly and gained their reward after powerful drives by prop Callum Taylor and No.8 Gareth Price led to a ruck close to the Mold line. Prop Richard Hillier-Evans but playing as an emergency centre finished off the move by joining and by forcing his way over for a try converted by co-centre Ben Reed. This closed the scoring of a match which should give an inexperienced Dinbych side a great deal of confidence for the challenges ahead.
