Valiant display at Parc Bodegroes.

Dinbych rounded off a month of playing the top four sides in the Division with a visit to Parc Bodegroes, home to 3rd placed Pwllheli RFC.

The opening 5 minutes of the fixture saw Dinbych begin brightly with the hosts pressing deep into the hosts 22 over a five minute period, only for Pwllheli’s defence to hold firm and a spilt ball give the hosts the opportunity to clear their lines.

Pwllheli used this respite to reorganise their own attack and were soon surging forwards towards Dinbych’s 22, strong carries from the home forwards along with crisp handling from their backs shifted the ball wide for Wing Elgan Pugh to dive over in the corner. Fly Half Now Williams adding the extras with a superb touchline conversion.

Following the restart, Dinbych missed an opportunity to clear their lines and were put back under pressure when Pwllheli intercepted a pass to reignite another attack towards Dinbych’s 22. Strong carries in the midfield once again lead to the backs receiving quick ball and a deft shift pass from Full Back Ilan  Jones putting No.8 Morgan Dryhurst-Jones in for a try in the corner. Now Williams on the money once again with another excellent touchline conversion.

Pwllheli’s third of the day would come from a lineout in Dinbych’s 22, with the hosts using their physical forwards to batter against the defensive line before setting their backs free on the short side to take play to within two metres of Dinbych’s try line. Scrum Half Danial Williams caught the home defence napping as he stepped inside to take the score to 28-0, with Fly Half Now Williams once again splitting the posts for the conversion.

Following the restart Pwllheli were penalised for straying offside at their clearing kick, which gave Skipper Dan O’Sullivan the opportunity to kick for touch and put Dinbych back in Pwllheli’s 22.

Hooker Elliott Davies found a leaping Dan North in the lineout and the ball was transferred to the back as the pack drove on towards Pwllheli’s line. Peeling off the back of the maul Prop Endaf Waller dove over for his opening try of the season, with his Captain Dan O’Sullivan kicking the conversion.

10 minutes of to and fro play from both side’s was ended when Pwllheli broke out of their own half with some excellent running and handling, only for the final try scoring pass to venture forwards and call time on the move.

Dinbych were unable to clear their lines effectively and were soon defending a Pwllheli lineout on their own on try line. The ball inched over the intended receiver and fell to Pwllheli’s Hooker Morus Pari, who was at the tail of the lineout, to then crash over the line. Fly Half Now Williams was unable to make it four from four, with the ball ricocheting off the left post.

The final minute of the half saw Pwllheli back in Dinbych’s 22, and with a scrum 5 metres out. The perfect platform for No.8 Morgan Dryhurst-Jones to tear away from his scrum and dive over to the right of the posts. However excellent defensive work from Flanker Tom Jones, No.8 Gwern Pierce and Fly Half Dan O’Sullivan combined to hold up the ball and give Referee Aled Roberts Jones the opportunity to call the half over.

Dinbych once again began the half positively, with Skipper Dan O’Sullivan’s long range kick taking play deep into Pwllheli’s 22. From the resulting lineout and subsequent scrums Dinbych try as they might, were unable to break the hosts down and were slowly forced to concede hard won territory.

Back in their own half, Dinbych were forced back on to the defensive as Pwllheli searched for kinks in the visitors defensive line. Pwllheli surged forward towards the posts and were looking likely for a fifth score when Flanker Tom Jones sealed on to the ball and secured a turn over just in front of his own posts.

The relief was short lived as Pwllheli fielded Dinbych’s kick and immediately set off with a counter attack down the touch line, Wing Robin Owen
sped through the defenders and finished an excellent solo try behind the posts. With Fly Half Now Williams once again adding the extras.

Some stern words behind the posts lead Dinbych to a period of pressure in Pwllheli’s half. Penalised for being offside at their box kick, Wing Tom Wynne took a quick tap and set Dinbych up for a try scoring attack. From the ruck the ball was moved out to Fly Half O’Sullivan whose attempted step through the line was thwarted by Pwllheli’s resolute defence. The resulting jackal attempt was deemed to have been illegal and Centre Aidyn Jones quickly took the tap before eluding five defenders on his way to the try line. Skipper O’Sullivan’s was unsuccessful with the conversion, with his attempt giving the right hand post a wobble on this occasion.

Pwllheli hit back with quarter of an hour remaining, when Wing Robin Owen showed his pace once again to scythe through Dinbych’s defence and take play up to the visitors 22. Excellent offloading from the supporting players then put Fly Half Now Williams in for a simple enough finish, but capping off a superb team try.

Injuries and tiredness were beginning to take it’s toll on Dinbych as loose passes drifted forwards and handed possession back to Pwllheli. And it was from a home scrum within Dinbych’s half that the hosts would attack, the ball being spun wide until Pwllheli were knocking at Dinbych’s 22 once again.
A bullocking run from No.18 Martin Jones looked destined to cross the white wash, only for some desperate Dinbych defence to fell him short of the line.

With the final minutes remaining on the clock, Pwllheli would once again unleash their Backs from the solid platform of a scrum in their own half.
Fly Half Now Williams burst through the defensive line with willing support runners ready to take the ball into Dinbych’s 22. Slick handling putting Full Back Ilan Jones through for a finish beneath the posts and the referee calling time on the game following Fly Half Now William’s seventh successful conversion of the day.

Dinbych will look to reset and make every effort to gain those valuable league points, with the visit of Llandudno and Rhuthun to Maes Terry Bryer in December.
