Williams charges Dinbych onto victory

Both teams defied the dreadful playing conditions of continuous rain and a heavy muddy pitch to provide a closely fought  encounter. Dinbych dominated the first half scoring, crossing for three tries and leading by 19 points to nil at the interval. They then had to withstand an Abergele scoring revival in the final quarter with the only difference between the sides being an outstanding try by No.8 Robin Williams which secured a bonus point victory for Dinbych.

Dinbych opened the scoring in the 14th minute when they launched an attack from a scrum near half way. Robyn Cartwright broke away to the right before linking with full back Gruff Roberts who went over in the corner for an unconverted try. They went further ahead in the 18th minute with another attack from a ruck on half way with skipper Dan O’Sullivan making the initial break for Gruff Roberts to run in for his second try. Dan O’Sullivan added the conversion points. The remainder of the half was evenly fought until just before the interval when the lighter Dinbych pack excelled by driving the Abergele over the line at a five metre scrum for Robin Williams to touch down for a try converted by Dan O’Sullivan.

With Dinbych leading by 19 points to nil at the interval the third quarter was pointless as both teams cancelled each other out. Abergele then opened their scoring midway through the half when prop Chris Marsh forced his way over for an unconverted try following a forward drive from a short range line out. Dinbych soon replied with an outstanding try by Robin Williams who gained possession inside his own 22 before outpacing half a dozen Abergele defenders to cross for a crucial bonus point try.

Abergele pressed hard in the final ten minutes with hooker Tom Champion scoring near the posts from a short range tap penalty which was converted by outside half Cai Hughes. Just before the final whistle Tom Champion went over for his second try at a driving maul following a short range line out.
