Dragons close Shield campaign with a victory

Dinbych warmed up for the coming league season with a workmanlike victory over Wrexham in a highly competitive encounter in which both sides had periods of dominant play. The key to Dinbych’s victory was the solid scrummaging and driving play of the forwards in open play and their ability to take full advantage of scoring opportunities. They complemented this with a strong defensive performance to withstand some good attacking play by the visitors who had to work hard for their scores.

Dinbych had the better of the opening quarter and opened the scoring after an initial attack  took play into the Wrexham 22 with possession then recycled infield for outside half Robyn Cartwright to slice through the Wrexham defence before being halted just short of the posts. From the breakdown No.8 Richard Hilliard-Evans burst over for an unconverted try with Robyn Cartwright’s conversion rebounding from the post. After more Dinbych pressure Richard Hilliard-Evans then increased the host’s lead with his second try from short range again forcing his way over despite the close attention of several defenders. Robyn Cartwright added the conversion points.

Wrexham then came more into the game to dominate the second quarter and opened their scoring when Dinbych were forced to concede a number of penalties taking play deep into their 22 and the visitors breaking on the blind side of a short range ruck to go over in the corner for an unconverted try. Just before the interval Wrexham added a second unconverted try in the same corner after creating an overlap on the wing in a flowing move from near half way.

With a narrow 12 point to 10 lead at the interval Dinbych pulled away in the second half when Wrexham spilled a ball when attempting to launch an attack just inside their own half. Centre Jordan Wynne was quick to react by kicking the ball deep into the 22 and beating a couple of defenders to touch down for an unconverted try. Following good driving play by the forwards into the Wrexham 22 possession was recycled for full back Jac Jones to increase Dinbych’s lead further beating several defenders on a touchline run for an unconverted try in the corner.

Wrexham responded with their third unconverted try out wide after good approach play by their backs created an overlap on the wing but a penalty by Robyn Cartwright for an illegal tackle by the visitors put the result out of Wrexham’s reach at the end of a pulsating match.
