Derby day Blues for Dinbych

After only trailing by three points at the interval in this latest WRU Plate cup tie Dinbych then struggled to overcome the loss of several key backs through injury for Ruthin to dominate the second half play and run in six unanswered tries for a comfortable victory in the end. Dinbych started well dominating both territory and possession in the opening ten minutes with Niall Duke and Lewys Eden leading the way in the forwards whilst full back Gruff Roberts and centre Aidyn Jones threatened with elusive counterattacking runs. Unfortunately despite going through many phase of possession they were unable to breach a sound Ruthin defence to turn this into points. Ruthin gradually grew into the game and unlike Dinbych capitalized on their first period of sustained pressure after a quarter of an hour when they opened the scoring with an unconverted try by outside half Iestyn Davies. Dinbych then suffered a blow ten minutes before the interval when Gruff Roberts was yellow carded for a deliberate knock on in the red zone. Ruthin took immediate advantage with a forward drive from the resulting line out before moving the ball wide for right wing Josh Wilson to cross in the corner for their second unconverted try. Dinbych were then further hampered with the loss of Captain Tom Seddon and left wing Huw Mars-Jones who both had to retire due to leg injuries. Despite this Dinbych reduced the deficit in first half injury time when centre Jac Jones went over for a try after a long scything break by Aidyn Jones through midfield. Outside half Robyn Cartwright added the conversion to leave Dinbych trailing by 10 points to 7 at the interval. Ruthin started the second half strongly and after nine minutes took advantage of missed tackles to take play into the right hand corner before a clever infield kick allowed Iestyn Davies to go over for his second unconverted try. Ruthin were now dominating play with the back division stretching the Dinbych defence to its limits before creating an overlap for left wing Gwion Richards to go over in the corner for their fourth unconverted try. Dinbych suffered yet another injury blow when Jac Jones was forced to retire with a neck injury sustained as he foiled another threatening attack near the Dinbych line. Dinbych again reduced the deficit with a long range penalty by Robyn Cartwright but fell further behind following the restart when Iestyn Davies went over for a try converted by Gwion Richards. Ruthin then dominated play for the final quarter of an hour against a game but tiring Dinbych defensive effort which saw them add tries by No.8 Shaun Donnelley, replacemesnt scrum half Gethin Hughes and a final one by Iestyn Davies who took advantage of an outrageous dummy thrown by hooker Liam Davies before he offloaded the scoring pass. Gwion Richards added the conversion points to each of these scores to seal a convincing victory for the visitors.
