Tries galore in Cup defeat

This First Round tie of the Division 1 North Cup competition was an excellent advert for attacking rugby which saw 13 tries scored in a free flowing game with play moving from end to end and with the visitors emerging as victors as they outscored Dinbych by 8 tries to 5.

The opening ten minutes gave a sign of what was to follow with 3 tries scored in quick succession. Dinbych opened the scoring in the first minute when centre Gruff Roberts cut inside from the left touchline after good approach play to score at the posts leaving outside half Dan O’Sullivan with an easy conversion. Pwllheli replied four minutes later when flanker Myfyr Parry went over for a try following a quickly taken tap free kick from short range with outside half Noel Williams adding the conversion points. Almost immediately the visitors took the lead with a try from a solo effort by scrum half Daniel Williams from a ruck near the Dinbych 22 with his half back partner again converting.

Midway through the half Pwllheli extended their lead with a try by hooker Harry Roberts who went over after Pwllheli created an overlap on the right of a ruck near the Dinbych posts with Noel Williams again adding the extras.

Dinbych replied five minutes before the interval when flanker Gwern Pierce won line out possession on the Pwllheli 22 for skipper Tom Seddon giving Gruff Roberts the opportunity to beat a couple of defenders on the outside before going over near the corner for his second but unconverted try, There was still time left for Pwllheli to close the half with a second try by Myfyr Parry with Noel Williams converting to leave the visitors leading by 28 points to 12 at the interval.

Pwllheli increased their lead early in the second half with a second but unconverted try by Daniel Williams after the visitors had counter-attacked from near half way and then recycled possession from a couple of short range rucks. Dinbych replied with an attack deep into Pwllheli territory from halfway then recycling possession with swift handling by centres Tom Seddon and Gruff Roberts sending wing Kieran Bonar over for an unconverted try in the corner.

Pwllheli then dominated scoring as they added three further tries starting with a solo effort by full back Ilan Jones who regathered his own chip ahead for an unconverted try then a brace by wing Dei Owen both of which were converted by Noel Williams.

In the closing minutes Dinbych had reward for their refusal to throw in the towel as they showed their own attacking potential to close the game with two tries of their own. First Gruff Roberts went over for his hat trick try after excellent approach play then Tom Seddon went over for a try which he converted himself.
