Derby victory a nail biting affair for Dinbych

Dinbych struggled to secure a victory by the narrowest of margins to complete a league double for the season against their nearest neighbours. For much of the game Rhyl seemed to be the most likely winners and were denied victory themselves in the final move of the game.

Rhyl played with the advantage of a stiff diagonal breeze in the first half and pressurised Dinbych dominating territory as they went through multiple phases of play by good handling and their physicality in contact. The visitors opened the scoring in the 17th minute when outside half Callum Bennett kicked a short range penalty from in front of the posts. This energised Dinbych who hit back immediately when they generated a powerful forward drive from a short range line-out with prop Gareth Jones forcing his way over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Trailing by 5 points to 3 at the interval Rhyl took the lead in the opening minutes of the second half with a similar try with flanker Tom Williams touching down for an unconverted try after a short range driving maul. The visitors increased their lead five minutes later with a penalty from 30 metres by Richard Williams who had moved from full back to outside half. Rhyl continued to look dangerous as they dominated territorially and were only held out by a scrambling but determined defensive effort by Dinbych.

With just ten minutes remaining the Dinbych backs showed their true potential when they launched a counter attack from a relieving kick just inside the Rhyl half with Tom Seddon and Dan O’Sullivan finally releasing left wing Aidyn Jones to beat the covering defence and cross in the corner. This brought Dinbych within a point of the visitors for skipper Dan O’Sullivan to give them the lead with an excellent conversion from wide out.

Rhyl dominated the closing minutes attacking close to the Dinbych line but despite several close range attacks by forwards and backs they failed to break through a strong Dinbych defensive line. When they were awarded a kickable penalty in the final minute they opted to go for a try from a short range line out but despite going over the line in the last move of the match were denied what would have been their own match winning score.
