Our History

Clwb Rygbi Dinbych was formed with the amalgamation of the former North Wales Hospital and Denbigh Rugby Club. The North Wales Hospital was the first to be formed in 1972, followed by Denbigh Rugby Club in 1977. The Hospital Club used their facilities at the Hospital, playing on the King's Mill Fields and using their social club at Treferian for post-match hospitality. Denbigh Rugby Club used the fields and facilities at Denbigh High School at first and the Railway Hotel for post-match hospitality. They soon started to use the Graig Fields for matches, but continued to use the changing facilities at Denbigh High School. By 1982, Denbigh RFC had built the present clubhouse with two changing rooms at the Graig Fields on land owned by Clwyd County Council and Glyndwr District Council.

In 1990, Denbigh Rugby Club purchased the land from the two local authorities and renamed the site as Caeau Les Phillips Fields in memory of their first President and extraordinary fundraiser and administrator. In 1991, Denbigh RFC was granted senior status within the WRU. The North Wales Hospital and Denbigh Rugby Club amalgamated in 1993 and, with the imminent closure of the North Wales Hospital, all activities were now located at Caeau Les Phillips Fields. From 1994-1998, Clwb Rygbi Dinbych played in the Eastern Divisions of the WRU National League travelling every other Saturday to play in South East Wales. Since then, Dinbych, with the other North Wales Clubs have played in the Northern Divisions. With a gradual improvement in playing standards, the Club became Division 5 Champions in season 2003-2004, losing only one game.

A new Coach and a reinvigorated squad saw the 1st XV shoot straight back to the top of Division 2 North, undefeated at Home the squad are looking forward to a successful campaign in Division 1 North (2013/14).

Throughout this time, the Mini-Junior and Youth Sections have made a significant contribution to the overall success of the Club. In recent years the success and expansion of the Mini-Junior Section meant that changing facilities were stretched to the limit, especially with attempts to develop girls' and women's sides. This lead to the Club embarking on the construction of four changing rooms with showering facilities, two referees rooms, disabled toilet, kit room, general storeroom, together with the alteration of the existing building to provide a kitchen and dining room. These were officially opened by Mr Peredur Jenkins WRU District J representative, on Saturday 14th August 2004, followed by a game between Clwb Rygbi Dinbych and the Swansea Club.

We are sure that, with further developments on the horizon, we now have the facilities to enable us to continue to foster rugby in Dinbych and the surrounding area.
